Blood Stability Score (BSS)

The Blood Stability Score (BSS) is a quality index for ABP blood samples that takes into account the relationship between the temperature of the sample during transport and the duration of time between sample collection and analysis. 

The BSS will be calculated in ADAMS for all ABP blood samples. A lower BSS reflects shorter transport times at cooler temperatures. Conversely, a sample transported for longer times and/or at higher temperatures will have a higher BSS which implies that there is a higher risk that the sample presents some signs of deterioration. A conservative threshold has been set at 85, below which the sample will be considered as valid in ADAMS. This Score will be calculated through the formula BSS = 3*T + CAT. (Source: WADA ISTI)

With the Berlinger Q-tag family (CLm doc L & CLm doc LR) you are always prepared to measure the Blood Stability Score according to the WADA ISTI guidelines. The CLm doc L is a single-use device whereas the CLm doc LR can be used multiple times. 

With both devices we were facing to frequently asked questions, which we will answer below:

Expiry date vs. runtime

The runtime is the time from pushing the start button of the device until the end of the battery (365 days) whereas the expiry date labels the date where the device as well as the guaranty expires. For the BSS tracking it is therefore necessary to set the markers before the expiry date of the device and at maximum 365 days after starting it.    

How to set markers

For both devices you can set BSS markers after the WADA ISTI guidelines. 
To set the markers you have to push the “Info” button three times in a row after starting the device and the measurement.
