Sustainability in condition monitoring: How to improve footprint whilst optimizing ROI of your cold chain business case
What you will learn:
When it comes to sustainability in the pharma supply chain, we all carry the responsibility of reaching the set environmental goals. Why? Cold Chain monitoring is a part of the pharmaceutical supply chain that generates resource wastage. Whilst the emissions caused by temperature monitoring are comparably small to other areas of the supply chain, it is our joint responsibility to identify means for emission reduction.
A recent study performed by the renowned sustainability advisor South Pole on behalf of Berlinger has shown that device transport, packaging and disposal plays a minor role on CO2 emissions (12 percent) related to cold chain monitoring. The raw materials required for device production however take up to 85 percent of emitted carbon dioxide. Hence, the use of single-use devices for monitoring are the biggest driver of resource wastage. Reducing the number of circulating devices, whilst improving the quality of end-to-end monitoring seems to be the obvious solution. But how do we get there? And does this intention correspond to the common goal of cost effectiveness? Aligning sustainability efforts, cost efficiency and end-to-end shipment monitoring requires an ecosystem along the supply chain that drives innovation to achieve all of these goals.
